Licensing

How do I get Licensed?

What is Amateur Radio?

Because Amateur Radio operators (also called ‘hams’) operate:

  • on many bands (frequencies),
  • use quite a few modes of operation,
  • are allowed to experiment with antenna design and modes,
  • and are legally allowed to operate their stations at up to 1500 watts PEP,

the FCC requires them to be licensed. Because they are licensed, they are expected to operate their stations with a level of professionalism and following safety guidelines. Also, some technical knowledge and expertise is needed and expected.

Preparing to take the exam!

North Georgia Tri-State Amateur Radio Club, Inc. has been licensed by the ARRL to conduct examinations for the FCC for several years. All levels of license tests are given and because of utilizing an on-line testing service, generally new licenses and upgrades are granted and received within a few days of successfully completing exams.

Next Steps to study and test:

  1. How do I study/prepare for an exam? There are multiple sites that offer study guides and helps for preparation, also the ARRL has numerous books and study guides for a more traditional approach. A couple of the sites that are available are: Ham Test Online and SignalStuff.com
  2. How do I register for an exam? Click the link: Register.  This link lists the available test sessions and the fees. The pre-registration will elicit all of the information needed to submit an application for licensing.

Where is the test given?

Exam sessions are conducted by Volunteer Examiners (VE's) working under the direction of the FCC and the ARRL Volunteer Exam Coordinator (VEC). The test center is on the second floor of the Union County Community Center, Chamber of Commerce - Conference Room 201 which is located at 129 Union County Recreation Road, Blairsville, GA 30512. You can register via HamStudy by clicking this link and looking for the Blairsville Session which is on the First Saturday of every month at 9:00 AM.  The FCC charges a $35.00 fee to issue the license.  Additionally, there is a $15.00 exam fee in cash, check or money order made out to ARRL-VEC for processing.
